Community P.R.O.M.I.S.E.

Community P.R.O.M.I.S.E. – Peers Reaching Out and Modeling Intervention Strategies – is a community-level HIV/AIDS prevention intervention program, which relies on peer educators.  The peer educators will be young adults ages 13—19 who will be responsible for completing a strategic HIV/AIDS leadership and public speaking training; which will therefore allow them to educate their peers about the affects of HIV/AIDS and how the disease is significantly  increasing in the communities of color.  The peer educators will hold focus groups at schools, churches and in community centers.

Don’t Quit Be Fit Nutritional Project:

Sankofa will provide nutritional education activities along with other arts as a vehicle of change for healthy living, which we call “Don’t Quit, Be Fit” for life.  Adolescents ages 13-19 will learn to embrace the culture of various ethnic foods.  This is a great opportunity for adolescents to not only learn the value of nutrition, but how to cook.  Participants will explore indigenous foods from Africa, Mexico, Japan, China, India, Italy and Russia.  These cooking classes will promote an appreciation for cultural diversity.  Participants will learn about other cultures, heritages, traditions, as well as table etiquette.  They will learn about various eating disorders and the obesity epidemic.

Obesity has become the second leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States, second only to tobacco use.  Childhood and adolescence are key times for individuals to form lifelong eating and physical activity habits which are considered to be two critical periods for the development of this condition.  Overweight children are likely to remain obese as adults.  Therefore, obesity prevention in children and adolescents is a public health priority.  This program will explore dietary factors such as diet composition, energy density, fat intake, snacks, soft drinks and portion sizes.  Join us, we don’t want you to quit, we just want you to be fit.
