“No matter what destructive forces are present in the world, you can be part of the solution”

Bishop Dempsey Center The Bishop Dempsey Center has been developed in the community to provide both tutorial services and computer development training to youth who have and/or are at-risk of dropping out of schools as well as to grandparents, foster parents and community residents. Our goal is to empower our community and Stamp Out Illiteracy! Morning classes are currently held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m. at 1449 S. Keeler, Chicago, Illinois 60623, across the street from Sankofa’s Office. Evening classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m.
The Tutoring Program: With the recent addition of the Bishop Dempsey Center, Sankofa is introducing reading and math tutoring. This tutoring program is different from the others because it is designed to meet people where they are (Students advance at their own PACE). Upon starting the class, there is a reading and math assessment test along with a learning style test because everyone has their unique way of learning. The test determines whether a person will be in the beginner, intermediate or advanced group. Students also set their own goals because we believe that if you don’t know where you’re going you won’t know how to get there. We will also provide preparation for the SAT and ACT college exams as well as for the GED exam. |
