According to a recent study, Lost in the Wilderness: The Labor Market is Deteriorating for Teens and Young Adults in Illinois, 2000—2004

  1. Teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 in Illinois experienced a 9.5 percent decline in their E/P ratio.

  2. Illinois had one of the five highest teen employment rate declines of any state in the country on 2000—2004.

  3. Only 1 in 5 African-American teens in Illinois were employed in 2004 and 1 in 10 African-American teens in Chicago were employed this year.

  4. The employment rate for 16-24 year-olds in Illinois, who had less than 12 or 12 years of education, no high school diploma or GED was just over 50 percent (52.3)

Sankofa Safe Child Initiative, a not-for-profit 501C (3) grass-roots community-based social service referral organization, has embarked on the world of entrepreneurship.  By faith, we’re in the process of designing programs that will promote self-sufficiency, education equity, entry level employment opportunities, economic stability, and tools to empower our youth.  There is a growing competition for employment, and an ever-decreasing need for unskilled and untrained workers.  It becomes increasingly important for students who think they’re not college material to acquire some vocational skills before high school graduation.  “Education is the Key to Success.”  “We’re compelled to leave no one behind, especially our youth of today and the future of our tomorrow”.  Please help.  You really can make a difference.
